Be Still: and Envy Not

“A lot of this psalm deals with Envy – ‘a discontent feeling that drives us to want what others have’…

God does not look kindly upon envy… envy implies dissatisfaction with God, distrust of His justice, and doubt of His truth…

The envious idea that the wicked are better off than you is an affront to God… it undervalues the inner life and the life to come…

Delight first in the Lord, we must find our joy in Him, our satisfaction in Him and as He is the object of our desires, He will drive our desire, and in that we will know genuine satisfaction and joy…

There is a cost for this happiness though… “Giving up something we love for something we love even more…”

As we strive to trust and delight ourselves in the Lord, He “establishes” us, He holds our firm… and His ways become our ways… But we may falter along the way and in His grace He will keep us… God promises “abundant” forgiveness…

Psalm 37:7 Paraphrased: ‘Be silent, wait, be still before the Lord do not allow anger and frustration over injustice to drive you to sin and unfaithfulness, but trust me, I got this…’

We must learn to trust Him, to trust in His will, that we willingly place our lives in His hands, and refuse to wrestle the wheel away from Him…

“True self-fulfillment does not lie in a preoccupation with self, but in selfless preoccupation with God.””
